Each and every Marine Corps recruit has to survive 12 weeks of Boot Camp. To become one of the few and the proud, these recruits must first learn to survive. More than just a showcase of grueling training, these stories will shed light on the lives and backgrounds of those who make the decision to become United States Marines. Tragically, the events of September 11th take place in the middle of the sixth week of training. But for most recruits, the acts of terrorism only strengthen their resolve to become modern soldiers. Phase OneFollow young recruits as they prepare for Boot Camp at Parris Island. They come from all over the eastern half of the U.S., but it is here that they begin the transformation into U.S. Marines. During the whirlwind of training, fear and confusion overcome them, but they soon learn to tap the warriors within. As the first episode closes, they begin to work as a team, acquiring their military bearing.Phase TwoIn Phase Two, the recruits at Parris Island learn to cope with the punishing regimen of physical training and mental conditioning. They are issued their rifles and are pushed beyond their limits. In the swimming instruction, several face paralyzing fear as they are laden with gear and put into the water. Some head for the medical platoon as attrition takes its toll and nerves become frayed as a few find that they can't hack it. As the hour closes, the recruits learn of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The importance of their training sinks in.Phase ThreeIn Phase Three, the recruits face the gas chamber and learn the effects of nerve agents. Training becomes even more demanding as they rappel from dizzying height, simulating a drop from a helicopter. The culmination of recruit training is the 54-hour Crucible. Upon completion of this final test, the recruits march to the mess hall where the Warrior's breakfast is served. With the presentation of the Eagle, Globe and Anchor, the now former-recruits are officially called United States Marines.
