Jack Nicholson directs and stars as a downtrodden outlaw who finds a loophole that lets him evade the gallows by slipping a wedding ring on a lonely spinster (Mary Steenburgen). Not much for the married life, he is then forced to work on her gold mine as he dreams of escaping to Mexico.
